Initial Reflection

Sometimes we wonder, what would it be like without all of the extras of life. What would life be like living on your own with no one to depend on. It's not so easy for the girl in this book. Dana, a 15 year old girl, struggles for food, shelter, and just about anything else that she can get. With a little help from some friends, all they can do to survive is to stick together. From panhandling, to squeegeeing, they do everything and anything they can for the money they need. This book constantly keeps you on edge and makes you always want more.

As the novel begins, she is facing the problem of living on the streets with no resources and no one to turn to except for her two friends, who are in the same boat as she is. Initially, the problem is at home, in which she ran away from, but later on you learn that the real problem lies with her step father who pushes her around and occasionally beats her. Her Mother and sister she loves and misses, but that's just a shadow in her reality. She hides her emotions well enough to concentrate on whats important. "Survival".

Further into the book, you learn that she is very much so into art. She learns that she can use this to her advantage by drawing a famous drawing onto a stone slab outside in public for all around to notice, admire, and donate to. She uses this money to survive.

Do you think that every person in poverty is just looking for an inspiration to exceed in life or just gave up on the world at hand?

  1. I think everyone is looking for an inspiration because thats all they have left to keep them going.. if your in poverty for whatever the reason may be, your very limited to the opportunitys and motives to keep you living

  2. I think every person in poverty is looking for an inspiration in their lives because everyone gets a second chance. If you give up, you don't get a second chance.

  3. I think it depends on the person and what they have gone through. Some people could of gone through to much and just gave up hope, and had noone there to help them like most of us do,But others could of just given up on trying alltogether. Some people dont have that drive to work and make money, and go somewhere in life.

  4. I agree with Erica. It really depends on the person who is living in poverty if they want to get out and achieve something greater, or if they are stuck in a moment of time for a bigger reason. Regardless, I think society needs to look at street people with a little more compassion, because I am sure no one actively chooses that life.
