Character Blog #2

Dana, a 15 year old girl is faced with all of those traits that we fear the most. Poorness, no where to sleep, to one to turn to, and so much more. The stress is tremendous. She could go back home to the abusive life of her family with her step dad, mother and little sister, or she could try to hold out on poverty and see how things turn out. She tries to hold out on the streets and earn an honest living any way possible. trying to avoid begging and panhandling as much as possible seeing as it is illegal, she turns to trying to draw for the public, accepting any donation's that she can take in order to survive and pull herself and her friends off the street.

Her weaknesses are so visible. She is weakened by the thought of life without her friends, how life would turn out without them at her side and without their support, life away from her family and how much she misses her sister and mother. Her main weakness is thoughts of the past. At times she will break down and cry just at the thought of her family and the way things used to be. She misses them extremely, but that is a life she tells herself that she cannot go back to. She cannot take the physical and emotional maltreatment. This isn't an option.

Do you think that the decision's that Dana has chosen are correct or that there is another solution? Maybe she can sit down with her family and discuss the problems at hand. What is your opinion and solution?

Initial Reflection

Sometimes we wonder, what would it be like without all of the extras of life. What would life be like living on your own with no one to depend on. It's not so easy for the girl in this book. Dana, a 15 year old girl, struggles for food, shelter, and just about anything else that she can get. With a little help from some friends, all they can do to survive is to stick together. From panhandling, to squeegeeing, they do everything and anything they can for the money they need. This book constantly keeps you on edge and makes you always want more.

As the novel begins, she is facing the problem of living on the streets with no resources and no one to turn to except for her two friends, who are in the same boat as she is. Initially, the problem is at home, in which she ran away from, but later on you learn that the real problem lies with her step father who pushes her around and occasionally beats her. Her Mother and sister she loves and misses, but that's just a shadow in her reality. She hides her emotions well enough to concentrate on whats important. "Survival".

Further into the book, you learn that she is very much so into art. She learns that she can use this to her advantage by drawing a famous drawing onto a stone slab outside in public for all around to notice, admire, and donate to. She uses this money to survive.

Do you think that every person in poverty is just looking for an inspiration to exceed in life or just gave up on the world at hand?
